Dabbling in the Multi-Sport World

5 April 2008 - 3:48pm — Sarah Barber

Today the Treasure Valley YMCA hosted the Spring Sprint Triathlon, which consisted of an indoor pool swim yesterday, and the bike and run legs outdoors this morning. Since they always offer the option of team entries, I recognized the event as a perfect opportunity to put together a winning team and practice my TT skills over the flat-to-slightly-rolling 12.5 mile course. Several weeks ago when I decided to compete in the event, I crafted what I thought would be an unbeatable team, as I had a whole host of fast runner-friends from which to choose, and had recently (and happily) made the acquaintance of a fast swimmer.

Well, you can imagine my surprise when I learned two days ago that my very fast and strong teammate, Jenn Halladay, had put together an extremely competetive team herself! Truly, I was thrilled to know that one of my teammates would be out there honing her own TT performance in a race-type setting. (By the way, a super fast guy from our own men's team rode the bike leg for the fastest team result of the day! Props to ya, ER!) Anyway, a race is a race, after all, so when I learned that Jenn's swimmer posted a time nearly two minutes faster than my swimmer, well, I had a serious chase situation on my hands.

At the end of the day, my team finished about 33 seconds down on the winning female team, but it felt great to be able to make up about 75% of the time lost in the swim. And if any tri team other than mine was going to win, I am so glad it was my own bike teammate from Team Bobs-Bicycles.com! Way to go, Jenn--you gals were super tough today!

Now.....How to recover in time for the Birds of Prey Road Race tomorrow??? I'm thinking it will involve soaking in the hot tub, a good session with the foam roller, and an early bedtime.
